The Lost River flows south to north through the valley of the same name, parallel to the Shenandoah Valley and the I-81 corridor. Our Valley lies between Great North Mountain to the east and South Branch Mountain to the west.

The valley was originally settled--by Europeans, that is--in the mid-1700s. While historically the community has relied heavily on agriculture, the town of Lost City grew up around a the tannery, which thrived from 1892 until it closed in 1927.  Now not much more than a wide spot in the road, Lost City once had a theater company, a baseball team, a newspaper and three churches.

With its natural resources, spectacular views and easy pace, the valley is a favorite weekend destination for Washingtonians and anyone else seeking to escape the hustle and bustle.  Whether your ideal weekend involves hip waders and a fly rod or a good book and a pair of comfortable shoes, you'll find what you're looking for in and around Lost River.
